Cucur Udang / Prawn Fritters

28 Aug 10

I had not been eating prawn fritters for a long, long time. When my company had a seminar at Bayan Indah, we requested for prawn fritters for afternoon tea time and ... it was yummy!

Since then, I've been browsing around for the ingredients to make prawn fritter. Earlier, I did not know that we should add corn and carrot to the ingredients till I read it from Bayan Indah Facebook.

Anyway, this is the tried and tested ingredients:

100 g plain flour

4 tbsp self raising flour

1 tsp salt

Pinch of ground turmeric

Half a carrot

1 sweet corn

180 ml water

12 shelled prawns

2 tbsp sliced spring onion

1 cup oil for frying

Pancake ... my surprise Birthday Cake

27 Aug 2010

Jared loves to give us surprises on our Birthday. A few days ago, he told me ...

Jared : Mummy, I have a surprise for your Birthday.

Me : What surprise?

Jared : Can not tell you. Its a surprise.

A day before my birthday ...

Jared : I want to make a cake for you.

Me : OK

Jared : How to make pancake?

Me : I thought it suppose to be a surprise?

Jared : You just give me the instructions and I'll do it.

In the morning of my Birthday ...

Jared : Mummy, what is all purpose flour?

Me : But I cannot go down. It suppose to be a surprise.

Jared : What is a pinch of salt?

Me : But I cannot go down.

Jared : Ok, ok, you just tell Kakak and me the instructions, you dont look over here.

After about half an hour later ...

This is what I got as Birthday present from Jared.

To Jared, pancake is also a cake as it has "cake" after the "pan" and that is the easiest for him to whip out a cake for me. Thank you Jared. It's the thought that count. Love you much!

Happy Birthday to me and treasure memories. Its been 2 years since I started this blog to pen down my thoughts and memories for my loved ones, especially to Jared and Jaden. I hope they can read all these posts one day. Anyway ... as it is, Jared is very excited whenever he reads my posts especially those relate to him.

Happy Moon Cake Festival to everyone too!

Because you are my Kangaroo

26 Aug 2010

We were putting the kids to sleep. Then ...

Jaden : Mummy, I love you!

Me : Why?

Jaden : Because you are my Kangaroo.

I asked Hubby : What does that mean?

Hubby : Me and You and a Kangaroo too. Its from the Higgly Town Hero cartoon show.

Guess I have to watch cartoon show to interact with my kids.

Pavlova and Hubby's Not So Surprise Birthday

24 Aug 10
It was Hubby's birthday and I took leave on that day. We went and make passports for the kids. While waiting for our passports to be ready, we went to Old Town White Coffee at Jaya One for breakfast.
In the afternoon, my maid and I made cakes for Hubby. We made Pavlova and Red Velvet Cheesecake.
Hubby likes Pavlova and he missed it since his university time in Australia. I've not heard of Pavlova, had not seen it and of course, have not baked it. Since Hubby likes it and it was his birthday, I took the risk and baked it.
We had our dinner at Emperor Restaurant in Goldhill Club. We had cod fish, prawn, pork, beancurd and vegetables.
After dinner, Jared wanted to give surprise to his Daddy and asked him to stay upstair while we get ready the cakes. Hubby wasn't surprise as he saw those cakes in the fridge. He played along and showed surprise look to the two boys.
The Pavlova is made out of egg white and whipping cream. I put mango, kiwi, jack fruit and grapes to create colour on the cakes. I couldn't get strawberry and replaced it with grapes to get the red colour. I bought Passion fruit too but Hubby said he doesn't like passion fruit and as such, I didn't put it in.
My Pavlova didn't look quite right and according to Hubby, not as light but tasted good. Hubby and Auntie YC had 2 servings. Jared liked it and so did I. Hubby gave 7 out of 10 marks.
I will surely try to bake this Pavlova again and will ensure I have strawberry on it.

Passport Application and Renewal for Children

24 Aug 10

We decided to renew Jared's passport and make a new passport for Jaden. Hubby took the kids to take passport photos on last Friday while I was in East Malaysia. Hubby printed the passport application forms from Immigration website. I filled up the forms and bring along the following required documents:

  1. 2 passport photos each
  2. Original copy of Birth Certificate
  3. Photocopy of Birth Certificate
  4. Photocopy of IC of the Parent signing the application form (must be on A4 size paper)

As the Immigration office is also open on Saturday and Sunday till 1pm, we decided to go to the Immigration Department in Pusat Bandar Damansara on Sunday. We reached the office past 11am and were so disappointed when we were told that all the numbers for the day were given out.

For kids passport application and renewal, we are unable to use the KIPPAS kiosk. In addition, kids need to come along for passport application and renewal as their thumb prints are required.

I was on leave on Hubby's birthday and decided to get the passport done. This time round, we reached the Immigration office before 9am.

8.40 am - Reached Counter 1 to collect ticket number. We were told that the application forms that we printed from their website were outdated and requested to fill in a new set of form. The officer was kind enough to give us the ticket number despite us have not filled up the forms.

8.50 am - In just 10 minutes, our numbers were called and I've filled up Jared's form only. Proceeded to the counter for the passport application process while I fill up the form for Jaden. The thumb print for kids were required.

9.30 am - Paid RM150 for 5 years of 48 pages of passport each and were told to come back after an hour for passport collection.

10.40 am - Reached Counter 35 to collect passport. Our passports were ready and our ticket numbers have been called and the counter was serving 30 numbers ahead of our ticket number.

10.50 am - Left Immigration Department.

It was such a breeze that the entire passport application and renewal process take only 2 hours, unlike previously, I need to take a whole day off from work for passport application process and go back again after a few days to collect passport.

How to Get Married?

11 Aug 2010

While I was supervising Jared with his homework, suddenly he asked "How to get married?

Me : What do you mean?

Jared : I mean how do people get married? Is it we go to 1 Utama, we see sexy girl and ask her?

Me : Why do you ask?

Jared : I just want to know.

I wonder why and how Jared get this question in his mind.

I Need Attention

5 Aug 2010

Our 2 boys had been extremely naughty. I was talking to Hubby that possibly they were trying to get our attention.

A few days later, Hubby told me that Jared complained that Jaden is very naughty and has been disturbing him. Hubby explained to Jared that Jaden was naughty as he's trying to get his attention. Hubby told both of them that they need not be naughty to get our attention, just say "I need attention". After a while, Jared told Hubby "Daddy, I need attention now".

That was so sweet. I wrote "I need attention" on a small piece of paper and slot it on my computer keyboard, to remind myself to blog about it.

The following day, Hubby called me at work and ask if I wanted to have lunch together and I said "OK".

After lunch, I asked Hubby : Where are you going after this?

Hubby : No where.

Me : You mean you come here just to have lunch with me?

Hubby : I'm very sensitive. Someone dropped me a note and I know what to do.

Me : You mean "I need attention" note?

This was even sweeter. How can I not blog about it?

Culinary Experience with Rohani Jelani at Bayan Indah

31 Jul 10

I was invited by Audrey from Audrey Cooks to join a group of Food Blogger to attend "Fun Cooking with Rohani" at Bayan Indah. Bayan Indah has been nominated as one of the best cooking school in Asia and is the only Malaysian site recommended as Top 10 of The 2009 Saveur 100 of things to do in the World. The property was also Malaysia's House of the Year 2008.

Initially, I was thinking if I should join the class. I've not attended and it has never cross my mind to attend and learn Malaysian cooking, something that I've taken for granted. I was also uncomfortable as most of the participants are food blogger, I mean those famous one. And it was also the weekend before Jared's school exams. Looks like I had lots of excuses for not attending. Then, mother in-law and Hubby encouraged me to do something different with different group of people.

The class was to start at 9.30am. Bayan Indah is located in Kg Sg Penchala and Audrey decided to leave early for the place in case we get lost. We reached Bayan Indah before 9am and this gave me the opportunities to look around and take these beautiful photos.

Bayan Indah ... the Culinary Retreat, surrounded with green.

The Malaysian style of setting and design with open, spacious kitchen.

The stylish accommodation, the living hall, the seminar room and long bath with greenery view.
The participants and menu for the day.

FBB brought his famous Tim Cake for Rohani and Rohani was kind enough to share it with us.

We were served with this Cucuk Udang before the start of our class and also served with Lime and Mint drink during the cooking class.

Briefing by Rohani before the start of our class. She briefed us on what to expect, the food that we were going to learn, tips, ingredients, etc.

In the midst of the briefing, Rohani showed us some of the herbs that we would use from the garden.

Nasi Dagang with Masak Lemak Ikan Tongkol and Acar Timun.
Mee Rebus

It's all about presentation. The picture at the bottom left is before Rohani's touch. Bottom middle shows the touch by Rohani and tada ... the bottom right shows the much improved food presentation.

Watch all those cameras ... Food Blogger in action.
Our team ... Audrey and Annie and we learned Nasi Dagang with Masak Lemak Ikan Tongkol and Acar Timun, Mee Rebus and Bengka Ubi.
There were lots of laughter, fun and jokes during the class.
Food cooked by the 5 teams (13 of us) and lunch for the day.

Photo for the album.
I can't really remember all the names and I must attempt to note them down here. They were such a fun group of people to spend the Saturday with.
These are the peoples that I've read so much about in magazines, newspaper, blogs, etc and it was great to meet them in person in such a serene place, with nice food and great fun. It was surely a Fun Cooking day. This is life!

Thanks Audrey for the invitation and Thanks to Pick Shan for organising it.

I'm so glad of meeting Rohani Jelani and proud that Malaysia has Bayan Indah. Bayan Indah is a perfect place for culinary retreat, away from home and hustle and bustle of KL city, without having to drive or fly far away.

I'll be going to Bayan Indah again ... we are going to have our company's meeting at Bayan Indah and has signed up for its seminar package for 20 pax. My colleagues have read and heard of Bayan Indah and Rohani Jelani. They are so excited about going to Bayan Indah, and the food that we are going to enjoy, much excited than the meeting proper. So much so that I have to contain their excitement.
